A tool chest is a long-term investment. Buy the right one and it outlasts your tools. Here's what matters.
Steel gauge
Thicker steel means more weight capacity and less flex. Look for 18-gauge or heavier in the main body. Drawers can be slightly lighter, but they shouldn't bow under load.
Drawer slides
Ball-bearing slides are the standard. They extend fully, hold more weight, and don't stick. Avoid friction slides on anything you'll use daily.
Casters
If the chest rolls, the casters matter. Look for 5-inch or larger wheels with locks. A fully loaded chest is heavy and cheap casters will fail.
Locking
A tubular lock with a steel bar is more secure than a cam lock. If security matters in your shop, check the locking mechanism before buying.
Spend a little more upfront and you'll have a chest that works as hard as you do.
